Wednesday Wonder?

October 15, 2008

Very often I am invited to a party, or a shower and I’ll make the gift or the cake/dessert for the event. Lately the gift of choice is a nursing cover very similar to a popular brand that hides h@@ters along with a matching burp cloth.  When the gift is opened everyone is shocked and in awe that I can 1. sew and 2. know how to sew something like a nursing cover.

Equally as wondrous is the discovery that I bake and decorate yummy cakes and cupcakes.  I recently made some very cute “Horton Hears a Who” cupcakes for a baby shower that were a big hit.

Also over the past few months I have made a little extra cash sewing for friends- pillows, curtains, taking in some shirts, etc.  It is also a source of wonder and surprise when folks find out I sewed said pillows or curtains.

I’m not explaining all of this to toot my own horn or fish for a bunch of compliments. I do actually have a wonder on this Wednesday related to all of this.

Many times when this surprise and discovery is made- I can sew, bake, and cook -I am bombarded with “I didn’t know you could do this!” or “Will you sew/bake something for me?”

My Wednesday Wonder is this: Should I print up business cards to hand out at these events/moments so these wonder struck folks can actually contact me to sew/bake for them?

Would you be more inclined to call up the “mom with an at home business” if she handed you a legit looking card?

I’m curious to know if all these people are just trying to make me feel good, or if there is an actualy market for homemade, hand crafted gifts.

I don’t usually ask for comments- but this time I am- Please comment, I need the input!

You should definitely print up cards- not only is it nice to have something to hand out to market your goods and talents but its also nice to have to give out if you meet new moms that might be interested inplaydates and such. I have some cute cards that I bought from Vistaprint for basically free. And believe me, I am well familiar with the “I can’t believe you can sew/bake/create!” comments.

Yes, I agree that business cards are a great idea. When I was working from home, I had business cards printed pretty inexpensively at Office Depot (I think, it’s been awhile). It is an inexpensive way to add legitimacy to an at-home business. Another easy way to get started is to start a portfolio–a photo album with pictures of your creations. Then you have an idea book ready to show to potential customers.
